Seeded Man on Man (SMOM)INTRODUCTIONSMOM format places flyers of relatively the same skill levels in flight groups flying and scoring with each other in the same relative air. SMOM puts pilots with similar skill levels flying with each other EVERY round. MOM is the only event where you can out-fly your closest competition and influence their score. You have the opportunity to climb up the standings with a possible 1000 points by winning your flight group. The higher up the “seed” you climb, the tougher the competition. MOM flying is fun and exciting and introduces new challenges of strategy. Pilots who are not flying have the opportunity to observe others in a flight group and gain from their experience. The event also moves along nicely. SMOM is the preferred event in other parts of the country. They fly this at the AMA Nationals with over 100 pilots. CLASSESClasses are determined by the CD. Some contests will combine all pilots and model types into a single class. Other contests will be divided by traditional divisions (Open Expert, Open Competitor, 2M, RES). SEED ORDERThe seed order of the first round is determined by NWSS season contest standing. Pilots without NWSS points will be placed in the seed order at the discretion of the CD. Subsequent round groups are determined by the overall placing. Each flight group will have up to four pilots, depending on the number of entries in a class. Pilots placing 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th would be in the first flight group. Pilots placing 5th, 6th, 7th, and 8th would be the next group, and so on. Don’t be concerned with the complexity of flight order and frequency conflicts. The CD will do all that for you. You just need to be ready to fly when called. Tasks will be determined by the CD LAUNCHINGThere will be up to 5 winches. Each winch will be numbered and winch assignment will be determined at the discretion of the CD, either at random or by ranking, before each flight group launches. The field will accommodate four winches with a back-up winch for line breaks etc. Launches will be one pilot at a time at 10 second intervals as directed by the launch master. (Simultaneous launches are exciting, but are impractical in most cases). The intent is to put all pilots in relatively the same air. SCORINGEach group is scored man on man normalized to 1000 pts. Flight time plus landing raw scores will be compared within the flight group and highest raw score receives 1000 points for that round. Other raw scores within the group are compared to the leader’s raw score and normalized as a % of the leaders score. IE: The best time and landing within a flight group is 7:40 and 80 landing = 460 flight points + 80 landing = 540 raw score. This pilot would receive 1000 contest points. Pilot 2 scores 7:20 and 60 landing = 440 flight points + 60 landing = 500 raw points. 500 divided by 540 X 1000 = 926 contest points. In our typical contests pilot’s scores are normalized to a perfect score so these raw scores would net 931 and 862 respectively. FREQUENCY CONFLICTSIf frequency conflicts can be avoided any pilot might fly against any other pilot in the class as dictated by the running seed. If frequency conflicts do occur, every effort will be made to eliminate any conflicts between pilots who could potentially end up in the highest scoring flight groups. It may be possible that conflicts will occur but pilots will fly in seeded MOM and highest scoring pilots will still face most of the highest seeds during the event. Let the CD know if you have the capability of alternate frequencies. In case of an unavoidable frequency conflict within a flight group, we will move the lower scoring pilot to the next lower seeded flight group.
