F3J Rules

This local event will be run according to the following rules:

  1. Practice
The flying field will not be open for use until Saturday morning. A winch will be set up at the IEQF club field for practice from 12:00 noon on Friday until interest dies.

  2. Pilots' Meeting
Attendance at the Saturday pilots meeting is MANDATORY. Thirty (30) points will be deducted for failure to attend.

  3. Tasks:
10 minute Man on Man precision duration, spot landing.

Flight Groups in the F3J matrix format. Five or more each group.

One minute launch window; Ten minute flight window.

Scored flight time starts at beginning of 10 minute window or when released from tow, whichever is later. One launch per round.

  4. Aircraft:
Enter two models of your choice, both must be on the same frequency. Fly your choice of model each round.

  5. Flight Groups:
Flight groups will be established in a matrix format. We will do the best we can to match different pilots each round. Flight groups will be posted.

  6. Launch Equipment:
Typical AMA style winches w/ brake, braided nylon line 750'. Winches will be separated by 15 meters.

  7. Launch Rules:
A four minute preparation window will be announced, then a launch countdown will be broadcast. Launch any time within the one minute window (the extended launch window is to reduce the risk of collisions on tow). If you pop-off or break a tow line, you can relaunch, but the window keeps counting down.

  8. Flight Window:
A countdown and horn will announce the beginning of the ten minute flight window. If you are already launched, your time starts at the signal. If you are not yet launched or off the tow, your time starts when you release from tow. A countdown and a horn will announce the end of eight flight minutes (two minute warning). The end of the ten minute flight window will also be announced by a countdown and a horn.

  9. Scoring:
One point per second duration plus landing normalized to 1000 points per round. One throw-out per day if a minimum of 5 rounds is completed per day. We usually fly 6 rounds each day.

Over-flying flight window = minus 30 points. (landing counts).

No fly off! Lots of rounds! Lots of fun! Everybody flies!

  10. Landing:
25 foot circle 5 points per 15 inches (modified AMA tape). Landings will count regardless of over-time penalty. Stand wherever you want in relation to your spot, but landing approach must be from the designated direction. Aircraft contacting any person (you, your timer, or anyone else) will result in a zero landing score. Inverted landings count in F3J.

  11. Skegs:
Non-metallic skids and skegs are allowed.

  12. Other
Other local rules and safety issues will be addressed at the pilots' meeting. When a rule is not specified, AMA rules will apply.
